Do Language Technology Standards Help or Hinder Global Businesses?


Day 1 Agenda:

Welcome and Introduction

Keynote - to be announced

The Ecosystem of Standards - Donald A. DePalma, Common Sense Advisory, Inc.

  • Where do standards fit into a development / production process or application architecture?
  • What makes a standard a standard?
  • What is the appropriate process and framework to develop a standard?
  • Who makes sure that the standard is appropriate and works?
  • Who owns the standard, who pays for it, and who verifies implementation?

Language Technology Standards
Moderator: Tex Texin, Internationalization Architect of Yahoo!, plus representatives of:

  • TMX
  • XLIFF
  • OLIF
  • Etc.

Presentations of critical technology standards outlining the following:

  • What it is
  • Why it is was created
  • Who owns the intellectual property rights
  • How it is being developed and by whom
  • What the major issues are
  • What kinds of interactions are seen with other standards
  • How it is being reviewed

These presentations will be followed by 90 minutes of discussion on the intersection of these standards, how the groups could cooperate if they should, how to extend knowledge about and implementation of these standards, and what standards are missing.

Language Quality and Process Standards
Moderator: Keiran Dunne, Kent State University, plus representatives of:

  • CEN - Alfredo Spagna - The new European QS for translation service providers
  • SAEJ2450 - Rick Woyde
  • ASTM
  • Etc.

Presentations of critical process & QA standards following the same outline as the technology standards.

The Organization of Standards - Sue Ellen Wright, Kent State University

Day 1 wrap-up discussion - open issues, schedule for following day
