If you only have 2 hours free, it will be enough for you to do some shopping or sightseeing. Right next to the hotel you will find Creu Coberta Street. This street has plenty of shops, particularly clothing and shoe shops. If you just feel like taking a walk, you can go from the trade fair on up to the Mies Van der Rohe pavilion. It is worth going up the steps to the National Palace to enjoy the exceptional view of the city. Many of these buildings were built to hold the 1929 World Fair.
If you have a full day:
Plaça Espanya is well connected with the city centre. Two underground lines and various buses will take you there. Get off at Passeig de Gràcia, famous for its shops and Modernist buildings, such as Casa Batlló and the Pedrera. Afterwards, if you stop at Plaça Catalunya, you can take a walk along the Rambla to the Columbus monument at the harbour. If you enjoy architecture you will surely appreciate the Gothic quarter. There, you can visit the Cathedral, Pia Almoina, the Generalitat (Catalonian government) and the Roman walls. Two museums are also in this quarter, namely the Marés Museum and the History Museum.
If you have 2 days:
If you already know the Gothic quarter, another well-known medieval area is the Ribera. The Santa Maria del Mar gothic church is located here. The church has a very original structure as it only has one nave. You can then eat in one of the restaurants in Born square. Afterwards, take a walk along Montcada Street with its aristocratic palaces and museums such as the Textile Museum and the Picasso Museum. On the next day, you can go for a stroll in the romantic Ciutadella park and visit the Museum of Modern Art. To finish your sightseeing tour, the harbour is a good option since it has one of the most important leisure areas of the city, the Maremagnum.
